Neptune’s Squadron
Dear Fellow Divers,
The sinking of the “Neptune’s squadron”
has been delayed due to weather
conditions. It has been postponed to
October 2008 and we will be there to
take pictures as well as underwater ones
when we will go visit the dive site and
forward them to you on our website News.
This doesn’t change our plan to include
this new dive site in our half day
trips, it won’t take long for marine
life to migrate and settle down in this
new shelter.
Best Regards

Neptune’s Squadron
Dear Fellow
Divers,
Here is great news, a new and exciting
dive-site will be born soon, it will be
accessible by longtail boat, just 20
minutes from our Dive Center, and will
be combined for two or three dives with
the tin Mine Wreck and/or a reef dive
off the small Island of Ko Waeo:
The arrival of the four Douglas C-47
Dakota Skytrain military transport
aircraft and six Sikorsky S-58T
helicopters marks the penultimate leg of
their final journey before they are sunk
in the waters off Phuket North west
coast.
On May
5th 2008, the aircraft skeletons are
to be dropped into the sea about a
kilometer off Phuket north west coast
to create an artificial reef in the
hope that it will attract marine life
and become a popular new dive site.
The aging
aircraft, which have been dubbed the
“Neptune’s Squadron”, are US-built and
served in the Vietnam War, during
which Thailand was used as a strategic
base for airstrikes.
There to
meet the convoy Tah Chat Chai
checkpoint were Phuket Vice-Governor
Worapoj Ratthasima, Tourism Authority
of Thailand South Region 4 Office
Director Suwalai Pinpradub, and
representatives of the various groups
and agencies that are working together
on the project: The Royal Thai Air
Force, the Phuket provincial
government, the Thalang District
Office, the For Sea Foundation, the
Thai Dive Association (TDA), the
Department of Marine and Coastal
Resources, and the Cherng Talay Tambon
Administration Organization, which
provided 4 million baht for the
project.
At a
depth of about 15 to 20 meters, the
aircraft will be arranged in a
concentric pattern with two
helicopters in the middle. These will
be surrounded by an alternating circle
of airplane and helicopter fuselages.
The wings
of the aircraft were clipped at about
mid-length and the rotors removed from
the helicopters. All dangerous and/or
toxic components of the
mostly-aluminum remains were removed
at the air base before being
transported.
The entire arrangement, to cover about
2,500 square meters, will sit near an
abandoned offshore tin-mining sledge.
The sinking operation will be
conducted with the help of both the
Royal Thai Navy and National Parks
Department. The plan is to fix the
aircraft to the seabed using huge
concrete blocks. Upon completion, the
entire site will be surrounded with a
circular barrier of concrete blocks to
prevent any migration of the
structures across the sea floor, he
said.

Our Divetrips to Phi Phi have
excellent reputation and our Guests just
love it. Black tip reef sharks and
Leopard sharks are spotted regurlarly
there!!
Paradise Diving is the only Divecenter
who can offer 3 dives on Phi Phi and
with 1.15 hr has the
shortest journey to get there. We also
visit Maya Bay but because of the
increasing Tourism there we prefer to
spend our Picnic Lunch and relaxing time
on a quiet secluded beach.
Of course, all our dives are according
to the dive level and experience of our
divers and we combine diving and
snorkeling. We still keep our divegroups
small with only 4 divers in a group and
not
more then 8 divers on the boat.
You can book your private diveguide for
only 1.000 Baht per day.

As the wind
has been hesitating during the last
few weeks, the weather has been
changing a lot, making it impossible
for us to bring our speedboat, the
Kontiki, on Nai Yang Beach. Now that
the summer wind is back and here to
stay until June, and that the sea has
cleared up, we have brought our boat
back, and are ready to resume our
trips to similan. So as from this
weekend, we will travel to Similan
Islands every two days. We are still
the only dive operator in Phuket that
offers three dives during day trips.
Good to have our speedboat, the
Choktip, so close to the dive center
for the day trips to Phi Phi Island. (only
15min)
All the best to everyone, and we look
forward to welcoming you onboard!!

This is
just one of the few surprises you may
experience on our Day Trip to Phi Phi
Island. As we were going along the
wall of Koh Bida Nok, and after
passing by a few morey eel and schools
of jacks, a leopard shark appeared out
of the deep blue and swam slowly by us
as if pausing for the camera. And as
if attracted by the paparazzi, she
came back again, and we actually had
to move to let her pass. Add to this
magical encounter, the appearance of a
few turttles and a shy octopuss
between two camouflages, a relaxing
picnic on a deserted white sanded
beach and our day was complete.
Thank you Greg and Helen for these
beautifull pictures.
Best Regards
